The procedure to request a genetic test is very simple, but it varies depending on whether it is an informative test, for private and confidential use, or whether by contrary, it has to be presented as evidence in a Court of Justice.

Informative genetic test, anonymous and with no judicial validity

1. Sample collection

The easiest and painless way to obtain suitable samples for genetic researches is from saliva or buccal epithelium cells, obtained by rubbing the inner part of the cheek with a cotton Q-tip (cotton bud) or swab. Two samples have to be collected: with a Q-tip/cotton bud the inner side of the right cheek is rubbed, and with another, the inner side of the left cheek. Then, allow them to dry at room temperature in a protected place. Once they have dried, they have to be introduced into individual envelopes, which in turn, must be labeled with the name of whom the sample corresponds to ("alleged father", "child", "mother", "brother", "grandfather", "nephew", etc).

The sample collection can be done in LabGenetics or in any associated medical center, which are located throughout the Iberian Peninsula. Moreover, if you wish, LabGenetics will send a sample collection kit with instructions and the necessary recommendations to your home address, anonymously and free of charge. To obtain this you only have to fill in this form or print out the application request. Fill in your personal data, and send it by ordinary mail, fax or e-mail our center:

LabGenetics
Av. Cerro del Águila, 9 - 28700 San Sebastián de los Reyes (Madrid)
Fax: +34 91 659 22 99 · E-mail: info@labgenetics.com.es

If it is not possible to carry out the sample collection, directly, from any of involved people in the test, LabGenetics is prepared to offer guaranteed results from any other kind of biologic sample that could be obtained using indirect way, without increasing the price of the test and with the delivery speed:

  • All kind of biological stains: blood, semen, saliva, sweat, urine, etc
  • Cigarette butts, chewing gum, sweets, drink containers, toothbrushes, etc
  • Envelopes, stamps, clothes, gags, etc
  • Nails, bones, teeth, biological tissue, etc
  • One single hair with root attached (all kind of genetic tests)
  • One single rootless hair (maternal lineage test: mitochondrial DNA)

To guarantee the integrity of the samples, it is important to handle them carefully avoiding contact with the stained area where the biological trace (blood, semen, saliva, etc.) is found. Likewise, the same care should be taken with the cotton Q-tip/bud in the case of the buccal epithelium.

2. Samples consignment to LabGenetics

Once all samples have been collected and packed into individual envelopes, marked with the relationship of the sample with the case to be analyzed ("alleged father", "child", "uncle", "brother", etc.), you must fill-in the correspondening application request and sent it whichever delivery method: ordinary mail, urgent or courier company, to the following address:

LabGenetics
Av. Cerro del Águila, 9. 1ª Planta. Local 29-31
28700 San Sebastián de los Reyes (Madrid)

It is not mandatory to send the samples by a Courier Company, because DNA is very stable and will remain unaltered during the transport process.

In order to enable LabGenetics to issue the report with the results, the test payment has to be made beforehand, via bank transfer (to the bank account that will be provided with the printed application request) which has to be enclosed with the samples.

3. Carry out the tests and sending the results

LabGenetics is committed to carrying out the requested genetic analysis and sending the corresponding report within a maximum time period of 3 working days, without increasing the price. It is also possible to have a genetic report done in just 24 hours, with an extra cost of €150 per sample.

  • Courier Company
  • Ordinary mail
  • E-Mail
  • Handed over personally (in LabGenetics laboratories in Madrid)

Legal DNA Paternity Test

1. Sample Identification and Chain of Custody

The acceptance of DNA evidence in Court of Justice is subordinated to a correct identification process ,collection and delivery of the samples to LabGenetics laboratories.

To guarantee the authenticity and integrity of the samples, as the privacy and confidentially of involved people, it is mandatory to satisfy rigorously the Chain of Custody of the samples. This is the reason why the different application request of the tests have to be enclosed with the Identification and Chain of Custody Document.

In order to be able to identify perfectly the people from which a sample is taken, individuals that are of legal age are required to present ID or any other document that proves their identity, whereas to identify a minor a recent photo is required. In the absence of a photo permission is to be given to allow LabGenetics staff (or any of the collaboration centers out throughout all the Iberian Peninsula) to take a photo in digital format.

For samples to be taken legally in the case of minors, the petitioner is required to prove that he/she has the Parens patriae (paternal authority) or in the absence of it he/she must prove to be authorized to take samples from them. Although the express authorization of the mother is not absolutely necessary, it is recommendable due to the legal gap in this area. It is the judge who has to accept or to reject the genetic report as evidence if the mother of the minor did not give consent.

2. Sample Collection

In order to ensure the Chain of Custody from the moment the samples are collected until receiving them in the laboratory, the sample collection must be done by health professionals either in any of the sample extraction and collecting points found throughout the Spanish territory, or directly in the LabGenetics premises at the following address:

LabGenetics
Av. Cerro del Águila, 9. 1ª Planta. Local 29-31
28700 San Sebastián de los Reyes (Madrid) - Spain

You can ask for information about the sample collection points nearer you by calling the following phone number +34 91 659 22 98, or by sending an email to the following e-mail address info@labgenetics.com.es, or by filling-in the next formulary.

The samples collection will be preferably done by not aggressive and painless methods, using cells from buccal epithelium taken with sterile swab, although it is also possible to do an analysis with any other kind of biological sample (amniotic liquid, chorionic villus, blood, semen, hairs, skeletal remains, etc). The professional themselves in charge of doing the sample collection will be the responsible ones in charge of the samples identification and also the ones in charge of custodying them, till the moment they send it to our laboratory.

In order to make LabGenetics able to issue the report with the results, the payment of the test has to be done beforehand, via bank transfer (to the bank account that will be provided in the center where the samples collection will be done) or via certified check, which has to be enclosed with the samples.
