Frequently asked questions about hereditary deseases

Is there any genetic test that shows a predisposition to heart attacks?

Yes. LabGenetics uses a genetic test named "hereditary thrombophilia diagnosis", in which different associated mutations with genetic predisposition to suffer venous thromboembolism (thrombosis) are analyzed. These appear spontaneously at an early age (under 40 years old) without any apparent reason and with a tendency to reappear.

Can I be 100% sure that I will get cancer?

LabGenetics does genetics tests to analyze the presence or the absence of mutations in genes attributed to increased risk of developing a type of cancer. For example, mutations in BRCA1 and 2 genes increase the risk of a person of developing breast and ovarian cancer. However, it is worth mentioning that people with mutations in those genes will not necessarily develop a cancer.

Is there a genetic test for the early Parkinson and Alzheimer diagnosis?

LabGenetics offers genetic testing to look for mutations in genes related with the appearance of the main neurologic diseases, including Alzheimer and Parkinson.

Can male infertility be due to genetic causes?

Yes. It is demonstrated that certain alterations in Y chromosome are associated with the absence of spermatozoid in the semen (azoospermia) and can decrease the number and the mobility of the spermatozoid (oligospermia). LabGenetics does genetic research to detect microdeletions in the Y chromosome that are the cause of 20% of the non-obstructive infertily cases, as well as the detection of mutations in the CFTR gene which are the cause of the so-called "congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens."

Is it possible to do any kind of test to women with spontaneous recurrent aborts?

Yes. In the case of women who have suffered spontaneous recurrent abortions for unknown reasons, or have problems of preeclampsia or eclampsia it is recommendable to do a genetic study to eliminate the presence of mutations in genes related to the coagulation mechanism (Factor V of Leiden, Factor II and MTHFR). Is it possible to know how a person will react to a certain medicine?

Yes, in some cases. LabGenetics is one of the few Spanish laboratories that has a range of services dedicated to pharmacogenetic, in which different polymorphism (genetic variability) associated with the metabolism of different medicines are analyzed with the intention of offering the most personalized therapeutic treatment. Check here our pharmacogenetic here service applications.
